About the Event

"It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence."

 ~B.K.S. Iyengar

The term ‘biomechanical alignment’ refers to the alignment of the body’s bones and joints in relation to each other. When we are biomechanically aligned, all of our bones are stacked in line with our joints in a position which allows each joint to function optimally. Since the body is a complex and integrated structure, if one thing is out of alignment, it begins a chain effect which can shift the alignment in many other areas.

We can think of our body much like a skyscraper in regards to our biomechanical alignment. If we build our skyscraper without a level and square foundation,  we’ll quickly face serious structural challenges as we start to notice the gaps and measurements getting further and further from alignment.  By the time we reach the 30th floor, safety standards will be failing and there will be obvious problems with structure;  by the time we reach the top, we have become the Leaning Tower of Pisa and facing a serious situation! Luckily for us though, our body is smarter than a building and through a righting mechanism and tensegrity, each time we stray from our center line in one direction,  we will eventually veer back in another direction to maintain our central balance. It’s for this reason that misalignment often (although not always) has a zig-zag or spiraling path through our body.

There are many contributing factors when we look at the causes of misalignment: an injury, a repetitive habit of movement (often work or sports-related), too much time spent seated, muscle weakness or tightness, a mis-turned foot, or even a postural habit that formed when we were very young as we learned to imitate our parents and primary caregivers. The reasons for misalignment are too vast to name, but fortunately for us, we have a correct biomechanical alignment, and if we can restore it in our bodies, we create a solid platform from which health and vitality in our bones, joints, and musculature can flourish.

Only 5 spots are available so please register early to avoid disappointment!
