What is Therapeutic Yoga?

Updated: Feb 28, 2021

Our Therapeutic Yoga program is one which has been developed over the past 12 years and combines the 25,000 hours of teaching experience and knowledge of our senior yoga therapists with those of the wonderful massage therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, counsellors, and philosophers who have collaborated with us on educational projects, and who have so graciously shared their insights and supported our mission of awareness and validation of yoga as a healing modality.

These classes are gentle, restorative, and designed to provide support to the healing processes of our body. Healing is not something we, someone, or something does or ‘to’ our body, but rather, is a natural and inherent process which our body has refined over hundreds of thousands of generations to do on its own. The real question is, what’s getting in its way? Our efforts are in becoming aware of what may be preventing this healing process, and in determining safe and productive options to create support as we re-train, repattern, and remove the obstacles that may impede our healing process. In everything we do to care for ourselves, we are simply creating the environment that enables our own cellular processes to occur; self-healing is the only healing and everything else is ‘helping’. The nature of the relationship between practice and effect is a slow-moving, but long-lasting process which can transform our understanding of our body and self.

These classes are designed to educate, inspire, support, and above all, to provide a safe environment for healing from a variety of physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Never underestimate the power of community in the healing process, and at Centered Within Yoga, we care about each other. You will see this consistently in the approach of our teachings and in the interactions happening in class as we help each student find the right options for their needs.

Here are some of the topics we focus on in our Therapeutic Yoga Classes:

  • Joint repair, recovery, and mobilization.

  • Gentle spinal decompressions

  • Hydration and release through our fascia and musculature

  • Pranayama: better breathing and breath patterning techniques

  • Organ stimulation, detoxification, and mobilization

  • Inflammation, inflammatory and auto-immune conditions

  • Fibro-myalgia, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain

  • Anxiety, depression, panic disorders

  • Mindfulness and meditation

Our group therapeutic classes are an affordable and effective way to get help wherever you are along your healing path. If you are suffering from a complex condition or severe injury please email us in advance of attending class so we can discuss your condition and help determine whether a class or private lesson would be the better starting place to keep you safe.
